FOR TRANCOSO
Discovered in the year 1500, Trancoso claims to be the point that
Portuguese explorer, Pedro Alvares Cabral first landed at the point
at which he discovered Brazil as a whole. The town was settled by
Jesuit priests in 1583; it is in a rectangular shape, with houses
still maintaining their original style. The main town square is called
“Quadrado” (Square), even though it has a rectangular
shape.
Trancoso has beautiful beaches that will leave you speechless. Perhaps
the most famous beaches there are Praia dos Nativos (The Natives’
beach) and Praia do Espelho (Mirror Beach). In the last few years,
Trancoso has undergone development by the French Club Mediterranee
and other hotels. The property values have increased mainly for this
reason. The local population consists mostly of those of Portuguese
and Indian origin.
On January 20, they have a big party in honor of Saint Sebastian.
The natives typically sing, play drums, and play guitars. Though Trancoso
was not well known four decades ago, a group of hippies rediscovered
it in the 70’s. At that point, Trancoso began attracting people
from all over the world. Artists, architects, and designers came to
Trancoso to attain inspiration. All over Brazil, a new style of art
was recognized and credited to this that we shall refer to as the
Trancoso Art Movement.
Trancoso is located in the state of Bahia. While Trancoso contains
excellent restaurants itself, one could easily make daytrips to nearby
Porto Seguro, where a wide selection of dining spots and art galleries
are located. Trancoso offers mainly local native dishes, Italian,
and International cuisine. You will enjoy the small quaint shops,
local arts and crafts, and exploring historical sites. You’ll
also love the near perfect year-round climate.
