The Charming Peninsula of Buzios
Just a short two-hour drive northeast of Rio
de Janeiro takes you to an idyllic tropical paradise where
sun and fun, as well as rest and relaxation, await you on
the more than 20 beautiful beaches that grace the charming
peninsula of Buzios. From late in December through Carnival
in February, Buzios bursts its seams with travelers from all
over the world, who follow native Brazilians to one of the
most precious pieces of real estate off the Atlantic coast.
The peninsula of Buzios was discovered by the famous French
actress, Brigitte Bardot, while on holiday with her
Brazilian boyfriend, in the 1960’s. Since then, it has grown
into a very popular destination for international tourists,
as well as for some of Brazil’s most famous television
personalities, all the while still keeping its original
charm as a sleepy little fishing village.
Accommodations. Accommodations on Buzios run the gamut, from
tiny hotels and inns to larger hotels offering all the
amenities. But to truly take advantage of all that Buzios
has to offer, a stay at one of the many small luxury
boutique hotels will serve you best. Some of the more
sophisticated boutique hotels offer beautifully appointed
rooms, individualized service, international gourmet dining,
and some of the most beautiful views of the turquoise and
blue waters surrounding the peninsula. Nestled among the
lush tropical greenery, these getaways are perfect when you
want privacy and serenity; when you need to just escape, as
Bardot did so may years ago.
The Beaches. The 23 beaches of the Buzios peninsula each
have their own distinct personalities and offer every
imaginable water sport, from diving, to wind surfing, to
boating and more. The most popular beaches include Geriba,
Ferradura and Tartaruga, where you’ll find the rich and
beautiful of Brazil soaking up the sun and playing in the
surf. Joao Fernando Beach caters to the rich Argentineans
who come back year after year, giving the beach a more
international feel, while the Jose Goncalves Beach attracts
nature lovers seeking to enjoy the beauty and diverse
wildlife of the peninsula.
Night Life and Festivals. You’ll find a lively nightlife in
Buzios during the summer months with many local restaurants
and bars offering up great Brazilian cuisine long into the
night. Live music spills from the many bars and restaurants
that line the beaches and that make up the famous Rua das
Pedras in the Centro district of Buzios. In addition to all
the activity in the summer months, Buzios also hosts an
annual Jazz and Blues Festival in July which lasts a full
week, and offers up some of the greatest talent in Brazil.
Late in November, you can catch films from many countries
around the world at the popular Buzios Cine Festival.
Cuisine. Regional and various international cuisines are
offered up side by side in Buzios. Here is where you can sit
down to a small buffet savoring regional delights such as
the famous feijoada (hearty bean and meat stew served over
rice) and seasonal seafood cooked the Brazilian way. Or you
can treat yourself to at any one of the many restaurants
serving international fare such as French, Italian, Thai and
even Moroccan cuisines.
When planning your next trip to Brazil, keep in mind the
charming peninsula of Buzios, where you’ll find year round
tropical breezes, peace and serenity around every corner,
and undoubtedly the friendliest people in the world.
